Lot Essay

The use of bois de bout floral marquetry is often associated with the oeuvre of Bernard II van Risenburgh (BVRB, maître in 1730). It was however also employed by numerous of his confrères, including Roger van der Cruse, known as Lacroix, Joseph Baumhauer, Jacques Dubois and Jacques-Philippe Carel, so a conclusive attribution is often elusive. Interestingly, of these, both Dubois and Carel are known to have subcontracted work to their contemporaries in their capacities as marchands.
