Lot Essay
Charles-Guillaume Manière, maître in 1778.
This clock follows almost exactly a drawing attributed by C. Baulez to the bronzier François Rémond (maître in 1774), illustrated in H. Ottomeyer P. Pröschel et.al, Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol. 1, p. 295, pl. 4.17.5. A number of examples of this clock exist and there are variations to the models including the reading figures being in biscuit porcelain or ormolu, in addition to the patinated bronze found on this example. A clock of this exact model but with the reading figures cast in ormolu is illustrated in op.cit., p. 295, pl. 4.17.6. Other examples of this model are in the collection of H.M. the Queen, the château de Versailles and Castle Stockholm (op.cit, p. 295). Interestingly the satyr children to the ends of the plinth appear on a further mantel clock of this model also with movement by Manière that was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 13 December 2001, lot 431. It appears that this variant, so close to Rémond's design, was a speciailty of Manière's versions.
