Lot Essay

The present work was inspired by a trip to Italy in 1954 where Trevelyan stayed with friends in the countryside near Siena. Between 1954 and 1955, Trevelyan relayed his observations of the surrounding area and executed a series of drawings and paintings of oxen ploughing, hauling and being shod. Trevelyan created these works both in Italy and his studio.
