Lot Essay

Harem girls were amongst the most popular subjects of the Orientalists. They are most often depicted in languid activities such as in Afternoon in the Harem.

Some Orientalist artists never actually visited the Middle East or North Africa and would base their compositions on images they had seen on postcards. This was not the case for Fabbi, who visited Egypt during one of his trips abroad.

Fabbi studied at the Accademia in Florence in the early 1880s, and he later became a professor in 1893. The following year he was admitted to the Accademia in Bologna. He participated regularly at the exhibitions of the Scocietá Promotrice di Bella Arti in Turin and in 1898 he received the title of Cavaliere della Corona d'Italia.
