An unusual 19th-Century French lacquered and ebonised-brass level,
the horizontal alidade with twin sights, finescrew adjustment, bubble level and stamped NIVEAU BREVETÉ J. LEFEBVRE, mounted over a calibrated but unnumbered horizontal circle with screw clamp and staff mounting, in a fitted wooden case with instructions pasted in the base and maker's label in the lid, two brass hooks and eyes, and carrying handles -- 26.4cm. (10 3/8in.) wide; with a Manuel d'Arpentage with card covers giving instructions foor use in a wide range of surveying and trigonometric operations, with numerous diagrams and one fold-out colour plate (2)
