'Topsy', a rare black composition taufling
with African features, dark fixed eyes, flocked hair, 'floating' hands and feet, squeaker and contemporary printed cotton tunic, trousers and blue ribbed silk cap with yellow tassle, 1860s --8½in. (21.5cm.) high; and a papier mache headed doll with moulded black hair swept into a plaited bun above the nape, the kid body attached to the wooden limbs with blue paper bands and the feet with painted red slippers, circa 1850 --9½in. (24cm.) high (shoulders restored)
