An extremely rare boxed set of a pair of Japanese Court dolls, clothes and accessories
modelled as a man and a woman with gofun covered heads, bodies, lower arms and legs, the upper limb portions of cloth, inset glass eyes and dark human hair wig, the three tiered black laquer box containing eighteen wrapped silk and damask court garments, shoes, boots, swords, fans, head dresses, a quiver, arrows and a Japanese booklet accompanying the dolls, January 1909, the dolls --13½in. (34cm.) high

Lot Essay

Thess finely made dolls were for display, the booklet accompanying them was written by Proffesors in History of Costume of the City of Tokyo. The detailed descriptions are of antique court customs in dress and accessoires, including modes of make-up, hairstyle and exact order or putting on each garment.
