Lot Essay

Henri Michel Antoine Chapu exhibited regularly in the Salon during the second half of the 19th century, winning awards in 1863, 1865, 1866 and a grand medal in 1867. This portrayel of Jeanne as a humble sherperdess was Chapu's first major succes when it was exhibited in 1870. Barbedienne edited this piece in several productions.
