Lot Essay

The present drawings was probably executed when Landseer was perhaps ten years of age. A child prodigy, he entered the Royal Academy Schools at the age of 14, was elected an Associate at the age of 24 and a full member at 29. There is a drawing showing the head of a similar dog, executed when Landseer was around 8 years old, in the collection of the Royal Academy.
