Lot Essay

In 1893 Alexander Reid financed Hornel and George Henry on a journey to Japan. The fascination with all things Japanese, which Whistler had promoted and which had been cultivated by the Aesthetes, had been gaining widespread interest. Their trip lasted a year and included visits to Nagasaki, Yokohama and Tokyo. On their return to Glasgow, Hornel exhibited his pictures in Reid's showrooms and the trip was to provide him with valuable material for some years to come. He maintained his association with the Far East, painting in Ceylon in 1907 and revisiting Japan and Burma in 1922.
