Charles Oliver was Cadell's loyal man-servant who had served in the navy during World War II and had been employed by Cadell soon afterwards. Sharing the artist's meticulous and orderly way of life, Oliver became an invaluable assistant. He was an excellent cook, looked after the studio, showed patrons paintings and even negotiated sales when necessary.

He was also a model, the present view painted on Iona on one of their many visits. A similar view is recorded in Tom Hewlett's Cadell A Scottish Colourist, London, 1988, pl. 54.
