Philipson was born in Lancashire in 1916 and moved to Scotland at the age of fourteen. From 1936-40 he attended the Edinburgh College of Art and after doing war service, returned in 1947 as a member of staff.
His early paintings of the 1940s show evidence of the influence of Scottish artist and friend Sir William George Gillies and of German artist Oskar Kokoschka. Following this, his style became more expressionistic in his use of strong colour and brush strokes, and he began to embrace varying themes in his art, including cock-fighting, zebras and cathedral interiors. In 1973 he was elected President of the Royal Scottish Academy.
