Born in Hankow, China, of Scottish parents, Crosbie returned to Glasgow in 1926 and studied at the Glasgow School of Art. A travelling scholarship enabled him to spend a year in Paris studying with Fernand Léger and Aristide Maillol. His work during the 1930s was strongly influenced by the French Surrealists, but during the 1940s and 1950s his work moved towards mural painting on a large scale.
Crosbie was made an Associate member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1953. In the 1954 Annual Exhibition at the R.S.A. there are four works listed for the artist, no. 300 as 'Tulip', which could be the present work.
