Lot Essay

Robert Heller comments on the Spectre of Stockholm series, ' ... painted after Howson had visited the Prado and for the first time seen at first hand the great masterpieces of Velasquez, the supreme painter, and Goya, the moral giant of art. The latter's Black Paintings made a deep impression on Howson. For Spectre of Stockholm, Howson drew his inspiration from that awesome, relatively small painting The Colossus' (see R. Heller, Peter Howson, London, 1993, pp. 107-109).
