Lot Essay

Joseph Chinard (1755-1813) was born in Lyon, the son of a silk-merchant. He executed his bust of Juliette Recamier, one of the most fashionable and beautiful women in Napoleonic France, between 1802-05. The original is in the Musee des Beaux-Arts, Lyon.
