A RARE GOTHIC POL-AXE, FRENCH OR ITALIAN
Second quarter of the 15th Century
In heavily patinated condition, possibly excavated, with narrow axe-blade with near-straight edge, integral stout square pean developing into four splayed prongs each of diamond section, and the central socket extended to form a pair of long straps front and rear, two-stage central spike of rounded faceted section changing to diamond section, fitted over the axe socket and extended at the base to form short straps in turn fitted over the longer pair, and all retained by a transverse bolt terminating in spiked nuts, one pyramidal, the other beak-like and of hollow-diamond section (perhaps a working replacement): on later staff with additional side-straps.
