With signed browned twist octagonal barrel rifled with nine grooves, blued fore-sight, blued block back-sight with one hinged leaf and engraved with a short panel of interlaced scrolls drawn over from the case-hardened breech, case-hardened breech tang engraved with a scrollwork design enclosing a tiger mask, case-hardened back-action lock with stepped long tail and finely engraved with buck and gamedog vignettes, figured walnut half-stock (bruised, the fore-end cracked), chequered grip, blued steel mounts finely engraved throughout, comprising butt-plate decorated with a stag vignette over the tang, hinged patch-box cover decorated with a further vignette involving a stag pursued by hounds (seized by shrinkage), trigger-guard engraved en suite with the breech tang, ramrod-pipe, and the case-hardened trigger-plate with engraved finial, with horn fore-end cap, original ramrod, silver escutcheon engraved with owners crest, and much original finish (the barrel browning slightly rubbed and with scattered rust over its length, bolt ecutcheon chipped), Birmingham proof: in original lined and fitted oak case, the lid with trade label and with brass shaped rectangular escutcheon engraved with owner's crest, and with its original sling and some original accessories including powder-flask and patent shot-flask

The crest is that of Dalgleish

Geroge Thomson worked at 16 Union Place, Edinburgh until 1832 and is probably related to Alexander Thomson, gunmaker, who moved his business to that address in the following year, continuing there until 1869
