The theme here encapsulates an early American folktale in which a young George Washington chops down his father's beloved cherry tree. Upon being questioned by his father, Washington famously replies "I cannot tell a lie." The story, of questionable authority, was circulated at the time of the president's death as testimony to his honesty and integrity.
