Lot Essay

The popular name for these kendis is 'pomegranate ewer' owing to the distinctive star-shaped mouth rim. A very similar ewer in the Groninger Museum, Groningen is illustrated by Maura Rinaldi in Kraak Porcelain, London, 1989, colour plate 255, where the author suggests a date of circa 1600-10 for this type of kendi.
