The goddess seated in royal ease on a tall rockwork pedestal, wearing voluminous robes tied at the waist, her face with a serene expression and her hair arranged with knotted tresses falling onto her shoulders, her hands held in vitarka mudra over a book resting on her right knee, an alms bowl placed on a ledge beside her, impressed He Chaozong mark within a double gourd, the hands, upper foot, book and bowl replaced in blanc-de-chine porcelain

Lot Essay

Compare the related seated figure of Guanyin of similar size, with almost identical rockwork pedestal, modelling of the head, and folds of the robes, but holding a child on her lap and with a meiping in place of the alms bowl, now in the Asian Civilisations Museum, Singapore, donated by Frank and Pamela Hickley, which was illustrated by R. Kerr and J. Ayers, Blanc de Chine, Porcelain from Dehua, National Heritage Board, Singapore, 2002, catalogue no. 8.
