A PAIR OF FAMILLE ROSE RUBY-BACK EGGSHELL 'SEVEN BORDER' DEEP PLATES
YONGZHENG (1723-35)
Each finely enamelled with a leaf-shaped panel depicting a lady and two boys wearing elaborate robes beside a bamboo table and two large vases, reserved on a gilt ground embellished with scrolling flowering foliage, below a further six borders: a narrow band of pale turquoise diaper pattern, a puce band of archaistic dragons and blue floral cartouches, a narrow pale coral and gilt dragon band, blue Y-pattern trefoils, a pale lilac cell-pattern band with floral cartouches and white enamel dragon roundels, and a gilt narrow scrolling lotus band at the rim, the reverse of each enamelled in a deep even ruby-red tone, one with rim crack

Lot Essay

An almost identical single plate is in the Salting Collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum, illustrated by W. B. Honey, Guide to the Later Chinese Porcelain Periods of K'ang Hsi, Yung Chêng and Ch'ien Lung, London, 1927, plate 88, and p. 53, where the author describes this plate as "a masterpiece"; another from the collection of Capt. A. T. Warre is in the British Museum, and illustrated by R. L. Hobson,, The Later Ceramic Wares of China, London, 1925, plate LVI, fig. 1; and a further example from the collection of Clive Kenrick, is illustrated by Edgar Gorer and J. F. Blacker, Chinese Porcelain and Hard Stones, vol.II, London, 1911, plate 223.
