Lot Essay

This dish illustrates well the transition from the famille verte palette to that of the famille rose; the translucency of the famille verte enamels is still evident, but the newly discovered rose is used with great enthusiasm and to great effect. Two related dishes, slightly larger, from the A. E. Cumberbatch Collection, also depicting scenes from popular novels, are illustrated by E. Gorer and J. F. Blacker, Chinese Porcelain and Hard Stones, vol.II, London, 1911, plate 221.
