Enamelled with Cybele accompanied by three of the 'Four Seasons', Flora, Ceres and Bacchus, in a chariot drawn by two yellow mythical leonine creatures, six putti in the foreground amongst baskets of flowers, all set in an extensive mountainous landscape, encircled by a gilt scrolling floral band below the rim

This scene is taken from an engraving entitled 'Terra' by Ant. Sassa, after a painting by Albani. However, plates with this scene and a gilt floral band at the rim, such as on the present example, are quite rare. The majority of Chinese plates with this design are decorated with a blue enamel scrolling foliage band, which may have been commissioned at a slightly later date, possibly circa 1745. One example with the gilt band is in the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem. Another, together with the other three plates in the set, all from the W. Martin-Hurst Colection, is illustrated by G. C. Williamson, The Book of Famille Rose, London, 1927, plate XXXIX (top right). Plates with the more common blue enamel band are illustrated by Howard and Ayers, China for the West, London and New York, 1978, vol. I, p. 332, no. 328 (for the Mottahedeh example); by Hervouët and Bruneau, La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental, Paris, 1986, p. 319, fig. 13.95 (for another example from the W. Martin-Hurst collection). A plate with the blue enamel border was sold in these Rooms, 11 May 2004, lot 164.
