Lot Essay

These candlesticks were once owned by the Victorian artist Sir John
Everett Millais PRA. Millais was created a Baronet in 1885, the first artist to be given the honor since Sir Godfrey Kneller (1646-1723).

These candlesticks were probably in his dining room at 2 Palace Gate, Millais's Kensington mansion. Here, Millais entertained and painted some of his most famous subjects including Tennyson, Gladstone, and Disraeli.
