Lot Essay

The composition derives closely from Raphael's Madonna di Loreto, commissioned in 1509 by Pope Julius II and known in numerous versions, including those in the Louvre, Paris, and the J. Paul Getty Museum, California, although the identification of Raphael's prototype has been disputed since the death of its last certainly documented owner, Cardinal Paolo Emilio Sfondrato, in 1618.
