Wristwatches with concealed dials were very popular in the early 20th century, the designs including covers consisting of either coins or monogrammed pieces that opened at the push of a button.

In 1930, Vacheron introduced a wristwatch with an innovative system of gold shutters covering the dial which could be opened and closed by sliding a small lever in the band. The louvered swivel shutter protected the crystal of the watch and consequently the dial from damages.

The Shutter watch was reissued in 1997 with the new name "Jalousie", the French word for "Shutter".
