Accompanied by Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch with applied gold hour markers and italian calendar version in 1952 and its subsequent sale on 14 July 1955.
This watch is one of the rarest versions and earliest examples of reference 2499. Made during the first year of production, it is equipped with the large claw-shaped lugs and the flat case back. In fact, two different case styles of the first series of reference 2499 were made, similar to its sister model, reference 2497, the simultaneously produced perpetual calendar wristwatch with centre seconds. Very few examples only have the prominently shaped and downturned lugs, such as the present watch, combined with a flat back. The other version came with slightly smaller lugs and a more rounded back.
The present watch is thought to be one of less than 10 examples of reference 2499 made with a flat back to appear in public to date. It has never been offered at auction before.
Patek Philippe produced a total of 349 examples of reference 2499, beginning in 1951 and continuing into the 1980s, the majority cased in yellow gold. The model is generally divided into the following four series:
- First series, such as the present watch: square chronograph buttons, applied Arabic numerals and tachymetre scale.
- Second series: round chronograph buttons, either applied baton or applied Arabic numerals and tachymetre scale.
- Third series: round chronograph buttons, applied baton numerals and outer seconds divisions.
- Fourth series: round chronograph buttons, applied baton numerals, outer seconds divisions and sapphire crystal (reference 2499/100).
The model is illustrated in Patek Philippe Wristwatches by Martin Huber & Alan Banbery, second edition, pp. 302 & 304.
