AFTERNOON SESSION (Lots 201-407) THE VAN VELZEN CAMPHUYS INTERIOR Jacques van den Bosch and 't Binnenhuis In 1900 Jacques van den Bosch (1868-1948) and architect Hendrik Petrus Berlage (1856-1934) founded 't Binnenhuis, an interior shop in Amsterdam. The firm was established at Rokin 120 until 1907, when it moved to Raadhuisstraat 48-50, Amsterdam. One of the shop's goals was to produce well designed furniture while educating about taste to civilians. Prices of their interiors, however, were too high for middle class people, which resulted in a small but dedicated group of customers of 't Binnenhuis furniture and furnishings. Dr. S. van Velzen Camphuys was educated as a pharmacist and chemist. For years the Camphuys family lived in the Dutch Indies in Semarang, central Java. There Van Velzen Camphuys worked for the Bandungsche Chinine Onderneming, which he continued with when the family returned to The Netherlands by becoming the director of the Amsterdam Chininefabriek. While back in The Netherlands in 1920 Van Velzen Camphuys wrote his dissertation and became a doctor in pharmacy. Both the Van Velzen Camphuys family and Jacques Van den Bosch family lived in Bloemendaal. There they became life long friends, and in his autobiography, now in the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie in The Hague (RKD), Van den Bosch refers often to the numerous beautiful commissions he received from the Camphuys family. From the early 1920's onwards, Van den Bosch designed several pieces of furniture, decorative panels, leaded glass and even carpets. All pieces of furniture have been executed in rich varieties of wood with delicately carved and inlaid details. Carpets designed by Van den Bosch are rarely seen, and the Schelpen tapestry is a very strong design. (Lot 221) Van Velzen Camphuys drove daily to Amsterdam by car and Van den Bosch often accompanied him. Van den Bosch remembers the nice and good conversations they had in his autobiography which, by the way, was never published. In 1936, when Van Velzen Camphuys died, an inspiring friendship ended. The present offered interior (Lots 201-223) have remained in the family ever since.
