Downman executed a series of portraits of the Wolff family, George and his brother Ernest Wolff, George's two daughters Elizabeth and Matilda, his only son Jens and later also Jens' wife and children. The Wolff family were Danish merchants and consuls in London. Other drawings of the family by Downman are in the Butleigh Court Sketchbooks, now in the British Museum, see G.C. Williamson, John Downman, A.R.A., 1907, pp. Iii, Iiv. This watercolour and lot 9 were sold as part of a group of particularly fine early English portrait drawings, from a collection originally formed by James A.H. Thursby-Pelham and sold in these Rooms 7 November 1995, lots 39-70.
