Lot Essay

Sandby executed several other versions of the present work varying the disposition of the figures and the dray cart, or adding groups of figures and exchanging the dog in the foreground for a peep of chickens. For further information see A.P. Oppé, The Drawings of Paul and Thomas Sandby in the Collection of His Majesty the King at Windsor Castle, London, 1947. no. 71-73, pl. 40. Sandby also published an etching of the same view in 1780.
