Lot Essay

The present watercolour presumably dates from Stanfield's East Anglian trip in July 1833 to prepare sketches for John Murray's edition of The Complete Works of George Crabbe. The view in the distance relates to an oil painting of the same title by Stanfield now in the Wallace Collection.
