Lot Essay

Lewis spent the winter of 1837-8 in Paris, but left early that year for Italy, visiting Florence and Naples, where he spent the winter of 1838-1839. While there he travelled widely and sketched at Amalfi, Sorrento, Capri, Procida and Isolina. In 1839 he was in Rome where he stayed until the summer of 1840, when he left for Greece, the Levant and Egypt.
