There is an oil sketch of the same subject painted circa 1839-40, see Lady Strachey, The Letters of Edward Lear, 1907, London, p. 341.

St John in Lateran is considered to be the oldest church in the world. It was founded by Pope Melchiade at the start of the 4th Century on the ruins of the villa of the Roman family, the Laterani.
