Lear is recorded as travelling in Turkey as part of a tour he made of Malta, Greece, Albania, Egypt and Sinai between 1848 and 1849. He left England again in 1853 and by 1855 he was in in Corfu, where he remained until the summer of 1857. It seems, therefore, that Lear did not execute this drawing from life.
