Wyld was secretary to the British Consul in Calais where he met F.L.T. Francia, from whom he took lessons, and through him met Bonington whose work he greatly admired. He travelled extensively with Horace Vernet visiting amongst other places, Italy, Spain and Algeria. Mainly based in Paris he exhibited in London from 1849. He was awarded the Légion d'Honneur in 1855 in recognition of the part he played in encouraging French watercolour painting. For another work by the artist see lot 116.
