Lot Essay

The frescoes in the House of Lords were also painted by Dyce, Maclise, and John Calcott Horsley. The walls of the Royal Gallery are painted with two 45ft long frescoes by Daniel Maclise. The frescoes painted by Cope for the Peers Corridor in the Houses of Parliament are entitled The Expulsion of the Fellows of a College in Oxford for refusing to sign the Covenant; The setting out of the Trained Bands from London to raise the Siege of Gloucester, 1643; Embarkation of the Pilgrim Fathers for New England, 1620; The Parting of Lord and Lady Russell, 1683; Basing House defended by the Cavaliers against the Parliamentary Army, 1645; and Speaker Lenthal asserting the privilege of the Commons against Charles I when the attempt was made to sieze the Five Members, 1642.
