The sketch on the recto would seem to be for Destiny (Towneley Hall Art Gallery; Burnley; Trippi, pl. 139), a picture that Waterhouse executed in 1900 to help raise funds for the British Army engaged in the Boer War. Three hundred and thirty painters and sculptors contributed, and the works were shown at the Guildhall Art Gallery before being auctioned at Christie's, where they realised a total of over £12,000. In the finished picture, the figure raises a cup to her lips in valediction to the heroes who are reflected sailing away in a circular mirror behind her. The sketch differs considerably in detail, although a ship quite clearly appears in the middle distance on the left.
The sketch on the verso shows a long-haired woman preparing a magic potion, and relates to several scenes of witchcraft in Waterhouse's later work. The composition is not unlike that of The Crystal Ball, exhibited all the Royal Academy in 1902 (Trippi, pl. 147), although the motif is closer to that of The Love-Philtre, a work of 1914 now untraced but known from an oil sketch (Trippi, pl. 202).
