Dicksee was a pupil at the Royal Academy Schools from 1870-1875. It was here that he came under the influence of Frederic, Lord Leighton (1830-1896) and Sir John Everett Millais (1829-1896). Dicksee studied with stained glass designer Henry Holiday (1839-1927) under whose influence he developed a taste for themes of chivalry and romance that he retained throughout his career. He also painted genre scenes and society portraits. Inspite of Dicksee's condemnation of the emerging artistic trends in the 1920s, he was elected President of the Royal Academy in 1924 at the age of 71.
