Lot Essay

The present drawing relates to an oil sketch in the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery of Modern Art dated 1904. A drawing of Clausen's mature style, it shows the development of Clausen's style. Like Frederick Osborne, R.H.A. (1859-1903), Clausen has abandoned the 'square brush' technique of Bastien-Lepage, and has adopted a more varied handling. The figure is more solidly modelled than we find in Osborne and the brushwork coarser. Both artists were interested in the effect of sunlight falling through the trees.
