Palace guard, Granada is typical of Edouard Richter's Orientalist oeuvre and reflects the Eastern influence that swept through European art in the second half of the 19th Century. Though the Orientalist subject matter of this work may be typical of the artist, the strong masculine figure of the guard is a stark contrast to Richter's penchant for depicting romantic oriental females. Here Richter emphasizes the guard's powerful musculature and brooding presence to create an atmosphere of nobility and steadfastness.
