CONTENT:

Ambrosius Autpertus: De conflictu vitiorum, opening Apostolica vox clamat per orbem ff.1-29 (R. Weber ed., Ambrosii Autperti opera, 1975-79, III, pp.907-31; M. Bloomfield, Incipits of Latin Works on the Virtues and the Vices); a version of St Isidore of Seville: Synonyma de lamentatione animae peccatricis ff.29-72v (PL, col. 0827b-0868c); unidentified treatise ff.72v-94, opening with an excerpt from St Augustine In Joannis Evangelium tractatus X ff.72v-73 (PL, col.1471-1472) and continuing as an unidentified commentary on the infancy of Christ, and prophecies relating to his life ff.74-94v.

The first treatise is often, as here and the earliest printed editions, attributed to St Augustine but its author is now accepted as Ambrosius Autpertus, abbot of the Beneventan house of San Vincenzo al Volturno. The pairing of vices with the virtues that can combat them was a very popular theme, apparently first developed by Prudentius in the early fifth century, and taken up by many subsequent authors. It is a sign of this treatise's success that it was attributed to the authoritative figure of St Augustine, one of the Four Fathers of the Church. Although manuscripts of this popular treatise are preserved in many libraries, copies very rarely appear at auction. St Isidore's Synonyma is arranged in two books. The first book takes the form of a dialogue between sinful Man and Reason who rescues him from despair and shows him that Sin is the cause of his misery. This second book is a discourse by Reason on vices and their opposite virtues. The text is undoubtedly paired in this manuscript with Autpertus' treatise for the similarity in their themes.
