A RARE AND IMPORTANT GROUP OF PROOF SHEETS SIGNED BY HUGHES-STANTON FOR 'ONE OF THE MOST SPECTACULAR BOOKS TO COME FROM [THE GREGYNOG] OR ANY OTHER PRESS' (Harrop, p. 122). The sheets constitute the proofs for chapters I-IV, together with the title and all five chapter-titles. Overall, there are no evident differences between these sheets and the published edition, apart from p. [21], where the text of the 21st and 22nd verses has been mis-registered, causing the first line of the 21st verse to encroach upon the woodcut above and the blue-printed initial letter 'R' to be misaligned. The two duplicate bifolia of pp. [8]-[9] both have the erroneous running-title 'THE LAMENTATIONS OF JEREMIAH on the versos (instead of THE FIRST CHAPTER OF THE BOOK OF) and the woodcut at the foot of p. [9] is further below the text block than it is on the correctly printed bifolium. Gregynog Press proof material is very rare on the market and this series of sheets offers an important insight into the development of one of the most remarkable books designed and illustrated by Hughes-Stanton for the Gregynog Press. Cf. Harrop 29; P. Hughes-Stanton The Wood-Engravings of Blair Hughes-Stanton (Pinner: c.1991), 'Illustrated Books' 21.
