EINSTEIN, Albert. Two autograph letters signed ('Papa' and 'Albert') to his first wife, Mileva, Berlin and n.p., 11 November 1925 and 15 October 1926, 2 pages, 4to.
OPPOSITION TO HANS-ALBERT'S FIANCéE, AND A BROTHER-IN-LAW IN A RUSSIAN PRISON. In September 1925, Einstein writes that Hans Albert's relationship [with his future wife, Freida Knecht] is 'not so harmless', worrying about his stubbornness; he has been making enquiries through the German embassy in Moscow as to the fate of Mileva's brother [who was taken prison by the Russians in World War I]; he is delighted with [his younger son, Eduard's] poem for the banker Fürstenberg, about whom he tells a little joke for Eduard's benefit. The letter dated October 1926 also refers to the enquiries through the German legation in Moscow, which have evidently not been making progress; Einstein is also much impressed by a photograph of Mileva's cactus collection. On the subject of Hans Albert's proposed marriage, Einstein forwards a letter from an expert who advises against marriage in a case where there are such significant faults of heredity in both families: 'Albert has promised that in such a case he would be governed by reason'. Hans Albert has been advised that he will need to acquire some social polish in order to succeed professionally: 'To judge by his parents, there is little prospect of this'. (2)
