Small oblong 2° (195 x 309mm). Engraved title and 16 engravings, EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with 4 related engravings and an engraved folding map from one or more other works. (Small chip in title-margin, light soiling and occasional marginal spotting, one of the additional plates mounted.) 19th-century limp half cloth (rubbed).
RARE. The engravings include views of the Pozzuoli's famed geological attractions: its many caves and splendid Solfatara; its antiquities: the Flavian amphitheatre, Serapeo, and various temples; and a view of Vesuvius. Paolo Petrini was a Neapolitan mapmaker who reached his peak at the beginning of the 18th-century; he is known primarily for his wall maps, many of which are also rare.
