Hand-coloured woodblock printed plan of the city of Kyoto, on multiple sheets of native paper, joined and folding, (overall size 1612 x 1230mm). The map shows the Imperial city surrounded by hills crossed by the rivers Katsura and Kamo, the city laid out in symmetrical order with the shrines and temples occupying the hills around the city, and within the walls the large Imperial Palace to the North East and the Shogun's Palace to the West, principal roads coloured in yellow, temples in red, hills in green and yellow, borders embellished with geographical text blocks, including distance tables from the Sanjo Obashi, the bridge of the Karmo from which distances to other cities were measured. (Some neat restoration to folds, blue papered wrappers worn.) Modern blue cloth case.

A FINE EXAMPLE OF JAPANESE CARTOGRAPHY AND AN IMPORTANT PLAN OF KYOTO, THE IMPERIAL CAPITAL OF JAPAN, 794-1808. The plan was issued by one of the foremost Japanese publishers of the period, and presumably used by visitors to find their way around the city and visit the 250 Shinto shrines and 1600 Buddhist temples. The first plan of the city dates from around 1674 (see Unno, 'Cartography in Japan', p.416 in History of Cartography, Volume 2, Book 2). Hayashi had been producing maps of various parts of Japan from the late 17th-century (Map of Edo, 1680) and had established a good reputation. This map is particularly interesting for its detailed rendering of the Buddhist shrines to the east of the city, and as a historical record of a city of which 90 was destroyed in the fire of 1788. A second edition of this map appeared in 1741 (see Illustration op cit History of Cartography, p.419). A modern key overlay tracing sheet to the map accompanies the lot.
