Two Maps I and Two Maps II (see next lot) demonstrate Johns' recurring pre-occupation with how the viewer experiences his art. With these two prints, Johns takes an obvious, elementary and well-known piece of Americana, a map of the United States, and allows chance to effect subtle changes. As the tusche pooled on the surface of the plates, subtle differences appeared which, in printing, raise questions of what the map is and what it represents.
