Lot Essay

This box forms part the extensive toilet service possibly supplied to the Grand Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, although it is also possible that the service could have been in the possession of the Kings of Denmark. Schloss Glücksburg was in the possession of the Danish throne until 1871, when it came into the possession of the Duke of Schleswig-Holstein as a result of the German-Danish war. The Duke brought furnishings from Schloss Ballenstedt with him, and it is more probable that the toilet service came to the castle via the Duke. For a discussion of the service, see Hermann Jedding, 'Eine Meissener Toilette-Garnitur in Schloss Glücksburg', Keramos No. 130, October 1990, pp. 3-16. Several pieces still survive at Schloss Glücksburg, other pieces are in the Kunstgewerbe museum in Cologne and others formerly in the Kramarsky Collection, were sold by Christie's New York. An oval box was offered by Sotheby's London on 5th April 2002, lot 58, and a brush-handle was sold in these Rooms on 8th July 2002, lot 104.
