Lot Essay

In 1825 the Saxe Gotha Altenburg ducal line died out, and after a complicated re-distribution of family territories, Friedrich, Duke of Hildburghausen became the Duke of Saxe Altenburg in November 1826. His territories in the Eastern corner of Thuringia included Schloss Altenburg near Gera. If the gothic F on the base of these vases does refer to Friedrich, the vases must presumably have been at Schloss Altenburg by his death in 1834, as he was the last Duke to have had the initial F. He married Charlotte of Mecklenburg Strelitz (1769-1818) in 1785.
