Of slightly flared form, engraved with a Privateer under full sail on a choppy sea and flying two versions of the Union Flag, a yacht nearby, on the shore in the foreground stands a partially-draped female figure representing Fortune, her foot resting on her traditional attribute of a wheel, a rod in her hand, the footrim cut with half-ovals, the base engraved with the monogram JJC

Lot Essay

This tumbler, while almost certainly of British origin, shows several features which are somewhat unusual for British glass of the period, primarily the polished-out drapery, and the half-oval cutting around the footrim.
