AN IMPERIAL EDICT
KANGXI, DATED TO 1697 AND OF THE PERIOD

Written on silk brocade woven with a pattern of cranes in flight interspersed with ruyi-clouds and mounted as a handscroll, the text arranged in standard form reading from left to right in Manchu and repeated from right to left in Chinese characters, the Chinese text opening with a four-character seal script title in a vertical line, Fengtian Gaomin, 'By the Command of Heaven', flanked by a pair of dragons, followed by a long text and ending with the date 36th year of Kangxi, corresponding to 1697, stamped with a large seal impression bearing the four characters, Zhigao Zhibao, 'A permit to authorise', continuing with its Manchu transliteration
